Anne-Sophie Mutter’s 1988 recording of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic is released today in Dolby Atmos®. Remastered by Rainer Maillard, from the renowned Emil Berliner Studios, using the original multi-track tapes, this new Dolby Atmos® version can be played back either via a surround sound speaker system or binaurally through a special stereo signal to head- and earphones.
 
Rainer Maillard comments: “Deutsche Grammophon has a very long tradition in producing music for 3D sound. It starts in the 1970’s with tapes with four tracks for quadraphonic playback. It was very challenging to bring four separate channels to one LP – but it worked. DG also produced quadraphonic LPs from eight track- and later from sixteen track masters. Of course there was also a normal stereo mixdown. Now we can now use these tapes to go further and create Dolby Atmos® three dimensional sound.”
