Clifford Curzon

. . . a reconstruction of much of Curzon's unique history as a performer . . . [the first recording of Mozart's A major concerto] is deft, resolute, and in the present transfer by Michael Dutton surprisingly rich in sound. Both rhythmically and dynamically it shows Curzon able to compose his interpretation early: the later versions reveal his ability to preserve and enrich it . . . a 1964 performance of the A major with Szell and the Vienna Philharmonic gives full measure and pleasure to Curzon's mature interpretation . . . Curzon's only recording of No. 20 in D minor is fortunately one of the best . . . Their Mozart D minor slow movement affords a particularly moving example of Curzon's rich-toned . . . hand-phrasing. Here, with Britten's total participation, Mozart casts long and very dark shadows, the more powerful for not being over-dramatised, but with its lowering thunderclouds pierced by glints of visionary sunlight . . . All these performances offer musical integrities which invite repeated hearings . . . [Schubert: "Moments musicaux", "Impromptus"]: Fine singing accounts of all, underpinned with fully adequate technique . . . later recordings of three Impromptus (1964 and 1971) are filled with breathtaking felicities and subtleties acquired by the maturing master over the years . . . there is a treasurable "Trout" Quintet . . . [Liszt]: Curzon's performance of the Sonata in particular gives Liszt full status as a great composer . . . [Schumann]: His "Kinderscenen" has much of . . . innocent grace and agile momentum . . . [Schumann: Piano Quintet]: This has to be still one of the finest accounts available of music not heard so often as it deserves. They are particularly impressive in the sweep they give to the near-moto perpetuo of the finale . . . [Brahms: Piano Sonata no. 1]: His performance is deeply poetic and thoughtful, as befits a fine musician in his mid-fifties . . . a most arresting account of this difficult work, taking any opening adolescent rhetoric forward a long way into unfolding maturity . . . [Tchaikovsky's] First Concerto receives two fine and vigorous performances well recorded . . . the later (Vienna Philharmonic / Solti in 1958) is superb -- especially good at knitting together musical ideas and figures which do not always follow one another with the emotional consequence they have here . . . Decca have given us a unique addition to a genre not often met with in gramophone recording: the origin and primary history of a distinguished artist's performing career.

Curzon's recording of the Liszt Sonata . . . is quite possibly the finest interpretation of that work I have ever heard . . . this substantial boxed set is a magnificent reminder of the extraordinary artist he was . . . alongside the prevailing gentleness of his touch, there is a positively startling vein of sheer steel running through his playing even in Schubert -- the slow movement of the D-Major Sonata, D 850, is a case in point. And with all his fidelity to the canons of classical restraint, he offers some deliciously held-back waltz rhythms in the scherzo of that work . . . Readers may often have been annoyed, as I have been, by collections of one or another musician's work that choose a particular version of a piece in preference to another that we may have preferred. With the present collection, there is no such problem, for "everything" seems to have been included . . . the feeling of his performance is affected each time by the personality of the conductor involved . . . in a Snape Maltings recording of the B flat-Major Concerto, K 595, [by Mozart] it is clear that Curzon's always highly personal conception of this work is powerfully enriched by the creative force of Benjamin Britten's conducting . . . There are also delights I have never previously encountered, including a treasurable 1952 Edinburgh performance of Brahms's "Liebeslieder-Walzer" . . . this ranks as one of the most intrinsically rewarding and expertly presented collections I have encountered. A place in the Classical Hall of Fame is no more than its due.

. . . an astonishing tribute to one of the century's greatest musicians . . . at his greatest, as in virtually everything on Decca's monumental tribute, his playing is of the rarest quality . . . Decca's unpublished recordings and rarities provide an intriguing slant on Curzon's empathy for the widest variety of styles and idioms. His way with Chopin's posthumous C sharp Nocturne, for example, makes you long to hear him in more Chopin, such is his inborn feel for the composer . . . But it was in the great masterpieces that Curzon's light shone most penetratingly . . . [Brahms 1]: such a searing intensity that it at once achieved a timeless and classic status. Again, Brahms's Second Concerto is given a no-holds-barred performance of such heroic grandeur that every awe-inspiring page is set alight. In Schubert there is a grand and stately rather than barnstorming "Wanderer Fantasy" and in the D major and B flat Sonatas a lightness and dexterity that cast a new light on every page . . . He can be heaven-storming in the turbulence of Franck's Piano Quintet; and when have you heard a more pensive opening of the same composer's "Symphonic Variations" or a more exhilarating race to the finish? But it was in Mozart that Curzon was at his most memorable . . . What festive brilliance in the too easily dismissed "Coronation" Concerto, and a reminder in all of Curzon's Mozart that a pianist's character and stature is essentially enshrined in the sonority of these works. Curzon's sound, luminous and transparent, was among his greatest assets.
