. . . one of the great pianists of our time . . . one of the most formidable of all recording legacies . . . magisterial performances of Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Mussorgsky and Busoni. Alfred is an artist who is completely sure of his strengths and tastes and never recorded anything in which he did not have absolute belief . . . Brendel certainly got his piano playing right . . . thanks for the legacy.

It is remarkable how reliable Brendel is in his repertoire, always musical, always convincing, perfectly proportioned, immaculately played, by turns elegant, fluid, passionate as required but never flashy or egotistical. If I could listen to only one rendition of a work for the rest of my life, very often it would be Brendel's, especially for Schubert . . . This collection is one of the great legacies of recorded music. One of the pleasures is tracing the development of Brendel's interpretations . . . This set gloriously reveals Brendel as the poet philosopher of the keyboard.

Brendel's 1960s discs of little-recorded Schubert works such as the "Drei Klavierstücke", D946, broke new ground, giving the listening public perhaps their first inkling that Schubert's piano music might inhabit the same sublime realm as his Lieder.

Handsomely presented . . . [an] extraordinary and substantial portrait of Brendel's artistry . . . It's difficult to imagine a more robust way with Mozart's Concerto in E-flat K449, the finale in particular brimming with a joyous, bounding energy . . . In Brendel's live recording of Beethoven's fourth concerto with James Levine, he is every inch both master-pianist and master-musician, his opening simple, poised yet subtly inflected . . . his finale is an Olympian dance of the gods . . . [Schubert]: the Impromptus Op 90 have all the freshness and vitality of a first discovery. Brendel is delectably light-fingered in the second Impromptu, its etude-like patterning emerging with a purely musical quality. He is as poetic as you could wish in Impromptu No 3 . . . [Liszt]: In all three recordings of the Sonata in B minor you are made conscious of an acutely observing listening artist, of Brendel's response to both a visionary masterpiece and a milestone in the history of music . . . [Chopin]: His single offering here of the "Andante spianato" and "Grande polonaise brillante" makes you long for more Chopin. For here are all of Chopin's Slavic mood-swings and early virtuoso glitter, characterised with exceptional boldness and declamation . . . [a] superb birthday collection . . . endlessly stimulating and challenging performances . . . No other pianist has balanced sense and sensibility more profoundly or successfully.

Satte 114 Scheiben dokumentieren Brendels Produktivität, aber auch seine Akribie . .
