Glorious stuff. The debonair singer/bandleader's residencies at the Admiralspalast theatre are one of Berlin's best nights out, and his sense of mischief and assured musicianship are given free rein in this splendid live recording. Raabe may have trained as a Wagnerian, but there's a delightfully impish quality to period ditties such as "Marie Marie" -- complete with castanets -- while the agile 12-piece dance orchestra can slip into modern pop mode, too. The spirit of the Comedian Harmonists enters the 21st century.

. . . A whole lot of oompah fun . . . [Raabe sounds] jolly and the music of the Palast Orchester bounces along with [joy] . . . There's no denying he has a good voice, at times gentle and soaring and at times keeping up in tone and vivacity with his band. There are two tracks in English -- "Speak Low" and "I Won't Dance" -- proving once again what a smooth voice Mr Raabe has. But it's on the bouncy oompah tracks like "Marie, Marie" that you feel the band is having the most fun. If you are after something a bit different, like your oompah and big band, or just enjoy music with a vintage renaissance feel, this could be just the thing for you.

Raabe offers a disarmingly straightforward tenor and delivers these gossamer tunes with a silky, conversational approach reminiscent of Noël Coward. His tone and delivery have an indefinable period quality, and the smooth Palast Orchester offers equal character . . . Raabe provides a divinely sweet "Sing Low", from "One Touch of Venus", and a sleek "I Won't Dance" . . . The best selections are the period pieces, which vibrate with an authenticity and style that transport the listener to a bygone world . . .

100 % souverän und stilsicher: Max Raabe . . . ein begeisterndes Dokument seines künstlerischen Status quo. Dabei besticht vor allem die originelle Machart der DVD, die souverän Konzertmitschnitt und zusätzliche (Spiel-)Szenen zu einem eindrucksvollen Dokument der Einzigartigkeit des Herrn Raabe und seines Palast Orchesters ausgestaltet. Dass dabei neue Songs und das vertraute Liedgut der zwanziger Jahre übergangslos ineinander greifen, bedarf ohnehin keiner weiteren Hervorhebung. Fans dürfen sich mit dieser Veröffentlichung also mehr als reich beschenkt fühlen . . . sein bis zum Understatement reichendes Augenzwinkern ist für ihn keine Entschuldigung für mangelnde Perfektion. Dass er sich dennoch durchgängig Leichtigkeit bewahrt, zeugt von einem gereiften Künstler, der seinen internationalen Ruhm beim Heimspiel in überaus rührende Gesten der Verbindlichkeit umzumünzen weiß. Das Repertoire erlesen (von Großkomik bis zur kontextuellen Ernsthaftigkeit bedient Max Raabe die Palette der Klangfarben), die musikalische Umsetzung jederzeit angemessen.
