. . . [these recordings] capture his voice in fine condition, and enshrine all his major Verdi roles.

There was no finer interpreter of Donizetti's, Verdi's and Puccini's tenor roles throughout his long career than Carlo Bergonzi . . . His singing of all three composers' music evinced an innate sense of how to mould an immaculate line projected on a long breath, an exemplary clarity of diction, and an authoritative use of the particular style called for in interpreting a role. Over and over again, you could hear, and can still hear on his many recordings, how to shape a phrase and to do so with a voice of intrinsic beauty, flawlessly produced, so no effort seemed involved. He eschewed vocal histrionics, and ensured that the expression was applied from within the aria or ensemble. Far from being a macho tenor, he was the aristocrat of the breed and as such universally admired . . .

One of the greatest singers in the 50 years following the end of World War II . . . His voice was golden-toned, liquid . . . He sounded initially like a greatly gifted lyric tenor, but his instrument also had the strength to take on roles such as Radames and Manrico without any sense of strain. Indeed, his performances in "Trovatore" emphasized the fact that the famous (infamous?) cabaletta stands apart from the rest of the writing for Manrico, which repays but too seldom receives a lyrical approach . . . Listen rather to Bergonzi singing 'Ah si, ben mio'. Perhaps the closest identification of artist and composer came in "Ballo in maschera", where Bergonzi's sheer elegance of phrase was matchless . . . A great, generous-hearted singer and musician who gave us so much -- may he rest in peace.

Bergonzi possessed a distinctive tenor that could generate ample vocal excitement even as he impressed connoisseurs with his cultivated sense of style and refined musical manners. He dominated the international opera stage for decades, a much-loved singer who commanded a fiercely loyal fan base, even during an era particularly rich in lirico spinto tenors . . . José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, Jon Vickers, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti -- the list goes on, and Bergonzi stood tall in this company . . . Bergonzi's voice was built upward from a firmly grounded foundation that retained its burnished luster and smooth projection throughout its range, an anchored solidity that perhaps owed something to the young singer's early training as a baritone . . . The singer's baritone origins are betrayed only in the slight husky burr of the voice, an attractive trait that Bergonzi would eventually polish and integrate into his own unmistakable vocal personality. . . . the top of his voice would soon fill out with ample resonance and increased security. Bergonzi's patrician command of color, dynamics and phrasing never left him, even after he had reached his seventies . . . Bergonzi's bewitchingly shaped and subtly modulated interpretations, especially of such signature songs as "Non ti scordar di me", could still leave an audience in tears . . .

What Bergonzi brought to the operatic stage, in a career that spanned half a century, was natural elegance, technical assuredness and an open-hearted musicality that gave his performances a beguiling and often moving honesty . . . You can hear his attention to detail and the care that he takes with dynamics and phrasing in so many of the classic opera recordings that he made at the height of his career . . . Especially notable in this 17-CD set are a miraculously vivid "Aida" (1959) with Karajan conducting and Renata Tebaldi in the title role. As Radamès, Bergonzi is peerless in his finely judged yet utterly unaffected phrasing. His Alfredo opposite Joan Sutherland's virtuosic Violetta proves to be the ideal pairing in a 1962 "La traviata", full of tenderness and youthful ardour. His Duke in "Rigoletto" (1964, with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in the title role) has a suave nobility that makes the character's wicked actions seem all the more appalling . . . It is in the Decca and Philips recordings of Verdi, mostly dating from the late 1950s and 1960s, that Bergonzi shows himself to be the model tenor, a beacon of superb technique, taste and faultless musicality. It's hardly surprising that Pavarotti referred to him as "The Boss".

[Puccini]: Immediately you hear the lovely line and the lyric purity of tone . . . [Verdi]: The control of Bergonzi's Radames and Renata Tebaldi¿s Aida is still spine-tingling . . . [Verdi / "Un ballo in maschera"]: [a] splendid chorus, and a vivid John Culshaw recording . . . Verdi's "Don Carlo" with Solti and a top-notch cast still has to be one of the finest . . . Bergonzi was in wonderful voice for Verdi's "Il trovatore" . . . [the famous three-LP set of 31 Verdi Arias showcases] his classic style . . . a great Verdi showcase . . . you also get Bergonzi's famous diminuendo ending to "Celeste Aida" -- which you don't get in the complete opera . . . and you would want to have this on your shelves, wouldn't you?

His remains one of the finest traversals of Radames on disc, from a vocal point of view acutely sensitive to the dramatic trajectory of his character on a moment-by-moment basis. He was both musical and musicianly . . . As is the case with other great vocal actors, Bergonzi's voice itself changes from role to role. Riccardo in Solti's dynamic "Un ballo in maschera" (1961) . . . finds him far sweeter-toned and more light and playful in manner . . . As Alfredo in the 1962 Sutherland "Traviata", Bergonzi . . . supplies youthful charm and gaucheness aplenty in a scrupulous reading of his role . . . his 1965 "Don Carlo" under Solti is certainly one of the most important accounts of the opera on disc . . . The measure of Bergonzi's performance is already indicated in his opening recitative, in which he injects a characteristic melancholy into his tone, lingering over individual words to highlight both their sound and their meaning, and using both a distinctive "mezza" voce and the floating of individual notes to colour in his detailed expression. Overall it's a superb reading, with Bergonzi demonstrating throughout his complete vocal mastery -- which is always at the service of an emotionally truthful interpretation. The 1964 "Rigoletto" once again finds Bergonzi entering fully into the emotional (and vocal) world of his character, his Duke registering as both graceful and vital, as well as at ease with himself -- just as he should be, whatever we, the audience, might think of him. Fischer-Dieskau sings, as ever, with intelligence . . . Renata Scotto's Gilda is alive in every note and Rafael Kubelik's conducting is conscientious . . . [in] the heftier Verdi roles, such as Manrico in "Il trovatore" . . . his singing retains that fine sense of artistic discrimination that made him the ultimate gentleman among Italian tenors and that gives his Verdi singing, in particular, such a clean sense of line and focused detail; here, for instance, 'Ah si, ben mio' is delivered with credible trills in place . . . [the] general impression of this important late set is of the continuing imagination and artistic conviction of his singing . . . Bergonzi's performances are invariably contenders for the finest account on disc, if such a thing is being sought, while every one of his interpretations -- whether of an opera or an individual aria -- will offer insights not only into vocal technique at its finest but into the text and the music themselves.
