. . . this nicely packaged tribute set is long overdue . . . it's all good fun, and a nostalgia trip to boot.

. . . [41 CDs box]: magnificent . . . This new box set does a solid and well-documented job of surveying the Phase 4 classical output . . . Of key importance are the two and a half CDs devoted to Bernard Herrmann . . . [his most important LP recordings: "Music from the Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers" and "The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann" are] both masterpieces of their respective genres . . . Stokowski's representation in this set is rightfully generous. Among the gems are his readings of orchestral excerpts from Wagner's "Ring" Cycle . . . Listening to this wonderful disc today, superbly re-mastered in its latest incarnation, is to experience a style and approach to music making that seems to have gone forever . . . Decca have covered the Phase 4 catalogue of classical music well with this landmark new release, which has excellent documentation, fine reproduction of the original sleeves for each CD, and faithful engineering . . . [6 LPs box]: This selection has been most artfully made . . . These still sound excellent today and are highly representative of the style of each conductor . . . No true audiophile enthusiast will want to be without this superb edition, which does tremendous credit to Decca's production team.

. . . ["The Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann"]: stunningly recorded . . . it presents a glorious aural picture. The percussion in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" positively glistens and the mood of anticipation is evoked with a real master's touch . . . Miklós Rózsa conducts music from his own luscious score for "Ben Hur" in a terrific recording (the deluxe brass section of the National Philharmonic is heard to magnificent effect) . . . Colour certainly spills out of a Khachaturian collection from Stanley Black ("Spartacus" and "Masquerade" suites), beautifully played by the LSO . . . the Phase 4 engineering certainly comes into its own here . . . Leopold Stokowski conducts some of the most exciting performances in this set . . . Hugh Bean is a very stylish soloist with beautifully focused and almost ethereal tone in slow movements . . . [the great bonus disc "Battle Stereo" demonstrates] Phase 4 engineering at its most imaginative . . . it's a highly atmospheric sonic spectacle . . . All in all, a terrific memento of an enterprising period in Decca's long history . . .
