One of the marks of a great singer is that his or her performances have "face". Here, in your mind's eye, you can see Ferrier's smile as she enters after Sir Adrian's vigorous, buoyant introduction. She really sounds as if she is singing of "good tidings". Her enunciation of the text is immaculate and the divisions are beautifully negotiated, with no slowing down or speeding up. The voice is splendid in its resonance and range -- Ferrier is always poised to give her utmost tonal weight and therefore is able to vary the colour and volume in the most delicate fashion . . . She and Boult give us Handel's inspiration at its freshest and grandest. Had she made no other record, we would know she had been a remarkable artist.
