Complete Decca discography with illustrations of all original opera and recital covers

With this 2CD Limited Edition book Decca pays tribute to a living legend of opera and recording as she celebrates her 80th birthday. As well as representing Joan Sutherland's greatest operatic stage roles, the tracklist also includes rarely heard arias and songs from her many recital albums, and duets with her frequent recording partner Luciano Pavarotti.

The book includes a complete illustrated discography of all Joan Sutherland's Decca operas and recital discs, along with their original covers, many of which have rarely been seen.

Joan Sutherland's association with Decca covered a period of nearly thirty years. Her first complete Decca opera recording was Lucia di Lammermoor in 1962, and the the last was Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur, recorded in 1988. Her many recital discs include the acclaimed collection The Art Of The Prima Donna and definitive recordings of French and Italian arias as well as collections of popular songs and favourites from operetta.

Born in Australia in 1926, Joan Sutherland travelled to London to become a member of the Royal Opera at Covent Garden where she sang for several years (from 1952); in 1959 the director Franco Zeffirelli staged a new production of Donizetti's then rarely-performedLucia di Lammermoor with Joan Sutherland in the title role. The first night was among the most sensational operatic events London has ever seen and Joan Sutherland became an international star overnight. Through the following decades she sang frequently in all the great opera houses of the World, including La Scala, Milan. where she was named 'La Stupenda'.

Encouraged by her husband and mentor, the conductor Richard Bonynge, Joan Sutherland focussed much of her career on the operas of Bellini and Donizetti. Her unparalleled technical accomplishment was even more remarkable given the formidable size and range of her voice, and it was the combination of astonishing agility and sheer vocal power which made her such a uniquely thrilling singer.

Since her retirement from the stage on New Year's Eve (31 December) 1990 Joan Sutherland has continued to travel, from her home in Switzerland, passing on her experience to young singers in competitions and masterclasses.

Also released for the Joan Sutherland Birthday:

Serate Musicali - an evening of song recorded in the Swiss home of Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge.

6 Joan Sutherland operas in the CLASSIC OPERA series.
