Today Riccardo Chailly is acknowledged as one of the finest interpreters
of both Bruckner and Mahler.
It was while he held the post of chief conductor of the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester
Berlin that he began his Bruckner cycle with one of the most popular of
the symphonies: No.7 in E major and this was recorded in 1984. Symphonies
0,1 and 3 were also recorded in Berlin and when Chailly moved to the post
of chief conductor at the Royal Concertgebouw he continued his Bruckner
cycle there.
The Royal Concertgebouw has a long tradition with this music and Haitink
also recorded a cycle with the orchestra during his years as chief conductor.
Chailly completed his cycle with the monumental Symphony No.8 in 1999.
Bruckners symphonies are truly monumental works which reveal their
musical structure over long spans of time and during his lifetime the
composer revisited the works and carried out revisions often several
times with the result that conductors are faced with difficult choices
as to which editions or versions to perform.
