RECORDING INFORMATION This 3-CD set gives a brief overview of the range of music he has performed and recorded with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields; the bonus DVD features complete performances of two of the most popular chamber orchestra pieces, Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and Grieg's Holberg Suite. Marriner trained as a violinist and held appointments with the Philharmonia Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra (he was principal second violin in the LSO from 1956-58). In 1959 he founded the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and in 1961 the orchestra made its first recordings on Deccas LOiseau-lyre label. That was in March 1961 and the repertory comprised Baroque concertos by Torelli, Locatelli, Corelli and Albicastro. In July 1962 another LP was made more Baroque string concertos (Manfredini, Avison), and in November 1963 Marriner and the Academy made their first recording for the ARGO label. This was a disc of Handels Concerti grossi, op.3. From that date onwards the partnership recorded regularly for Decca and, later, for Philips. Their recordings have sold in huge quantities and have won numerous awards and represents one of the most substantial legacies of a conductor with one orchestra. Two pieces included in this celebration of Marriner and the Academy receive their first international CD release: Wagners Siegfried Idyll and Waltons Sonata for Strings. |
