RECORDING INFORMATION

This album is released to celebrate Greece hosting the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and is a celebration of the leading Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis.

The joyous, life-affirming film ZORBA provided Anthony Quinn with his best-known role. In the film Zorba befriends a young Englishman, Basil (Alan Bates), who has come to Greece to write a book on Buddha. Through his relationship with the carefree Greek, Basil finds contentment and learns to celebrate life with the same exuberance that is a part of Zorba's daily life.

The most famous episode in the film is Zorba's Dance - so it is fitting that the composer transformed his outstanding score into a full length ballet. Highlights from the ballet - including beautiful vocal and choral passages - are here given a warm and lyrical performance by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under maestro Charles Dutoit.

Also included on the disc are excerpts from Carnaval and the Adagio for solo flute, string orchestra and percussion with maestro Dutoit conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra (London).
