The First Symphony is the fascinating starting point of Beethoven's unparalleled symphonic output. In this recording conductor and orchestra make a strong case for this under-appreciated work with an uncompromising performance informed by their shared understanding of the later symphonies.

The overture which has become known as Leonore No.2 was the first to precede Beethoven's only opera Fidelio in 1805. Though succeeded in that role, the power of the work has guaranteed it a place in the popular concert repertory in its own right.
