Debussy’s two books of Préludes are among the cornerstones of early twentieth-century piano literature and have been part of the repertory of many pianists. One of a group of young artists to emerge at the end of the 1960s, Calcutta-born Jean-Rodolphe Kars made several records for Decca at this time and he established himself as a fine interpreter of a wide range of music with particular emphasis on Debussy and Messiaen.
Debussy’s Fantaisie is
an early work (1890) and the composer's only large-scale work for piano
and orchestra. It is something of a rarity both in the concert hall and on
record and its inclusion here is a welcome reissue. All the recordings included in this programme are appearing on CD for the first time.
