A tribute to a hugely popular star with a high media profile - and an
important new addition to the classical vocal catalogue.
It was nearly ten years ago (in 1994) that Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu
shot to international stardom overnight with her sensational performance
in Verdi's La Traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden
under the baton of the great Sir Georg Solti.
That performance, recorded by Decca (and always among the best selling
CDs and DVDs) launched a spectacular international career in the leading
opera houses of the world and a major recording contract with Decca during
which Angela Gheorghiu recorded many solo recitals and complete operas.
Loved for the dark beauty of her voice, her dramatic commitment and her
truly operatic rise to fame, Angela Gheorghiu is now among the most high
profile classical musicians in the World.
This new collection of Angela Gheorghiu's greatest recordings includes
all her signature roles - Adina in Donizetti's L'elisir D'amore
with her husband - tenor Roberto Alagna, Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème,
several of her great French roles and, of course, Violetta in Verdi's
La Traviata.
As well as opera arias and duets the disc also includes an excerpt from
Fauré's Requiem and the song Muzica which Angela
Gheorghiu often sings as a hugely popular encore - as she did at the 2003
Last Night of the Proms.
