5 March 2003 marks the 50th anniversary of the death
of Sergei Prokofiev and this programme is being released to coincide with
that. The programme includes such rarities as the early orchestral tone-poem
Dreams and excerpts from the equally rarely heard Stone Flower.
One of Prokofiev's early piano works, Visions fugitives, is also
included here but in the version for string orchestra by Rudolf Barshai.
To complement these rare pieces some of the composers most popular
works are included and these include the suites from Lieutenant Kijé
and Love for Three Oranges. Both these and the cantata originally
written as film music for Eisenstein's film Alexander Nevsky are
performed by Charles Dutoit and the Orchestra symphonique de Montréal
in magnificent digital recordings made in the early 1990s.
