|
As a special price (3 for the price of 2) capbox, the 1872 version of Moussorgsky's great Russian opera taken from the 5 CD boxed set (Philips 462 230-2) which also included the 1869 version.
Valery Gergiev's recording of Moussorgsky's epic score, with the Kirov forces of the Mariinsky Theatre and Nikolai Putilin in the title role, has, since its release in 1998, established itself as definitive.
Now, to celebrate the 2002 Mariinsky performances at La Scala Milan and the Baden-Baden Festival (Germany), Philips release a superb value boxed set of the 1872 version which Moussorgsky completed after the earlier version was rejected by the Directorate of the Imperial Theatres. Moussorgsky found this rejection 'extremely beneficial' and enthusiastically set about expanding and improving the opera.
