Addition to highly successful Duo series (now more
than 200 titles available). La donna del lago is based on Sir Walter
Scotts The Lady of the Lake, which Rossini knew from a French
translation. Written as one of Rossinis operas for Naples, it was
first heard at the Teatro San Carlo on 24 September 1819. The opera makes
great demands on the principal singers and each has to have a solid coloratura
technique. Such enormous demands on the performers no doubt go a long
way in explaining why this work, which was important for introducing European
Romanticism into Italy, is not performed more frequently. The present
recording is taken from performances given at La Scala in June 1992 under
the direction of Riccardo Muti and a first-rate cast of singers.
