ABOUT THE FILM
The general who became a slave
The slave who became a gladiator
The gladiator who defied an empire
Director Ridley Scott brings the glorious battles of the ancient Roman arena back to the big screen. Set against the splendor and barbarity of the Roman Empire in 180 AD, Gladiator tells an epic story of courage and revenge.
Once a great Roman General, Maximus has been forced into exile and slavery by the jealous heir to the throne Commodus. Trained as a gladiator, Maximus returns to Rome, intent on avenging the murder of his family by killing Commodus, now Emperor. The one power stronger than that of the Emperor is the will of the people, and Maximus knows he can only attain his revenge by becoming the greatest hero in all the Empire.

COMPOSER'S NOTES
When filming was completed, Ridley Scott and editor Pietro Scalia began the long process of editing the film in the same studio where composer Hans Zimmer was creating the score in collaboration with Lisa Gerrard. Gerrard also performed most of the music vocals, which, Zimmer comments, "lent the film a unique sound that helps transport the audience to a completely different place". The score includes a complete range of scale and emotional level; sometimes with a huge orchestra, then intimate sections with Gerrard’s vocals.
For certain scenes, Zimmer layered the music to great dramatic effect, with haunting orchestral melodies underscored by a driving percussive sound. In addition, Zimmer notes, "Every film of this genre has fanfares, and Gladiator is no exception, but I really wanted to avoid a cliché approach."
"I love working with Hans because his music is idiosyncratic," Scott says. "The music I imagine while I’m filming is usually somewhat off-center, and Hans will always come up with something that gives the movie its own identity."
"This film is a remarkable look at the Roman Empire, and it works because we have a great story — a heroic story — and Ridley got the world right as well. It feels real," Zimmer states.
Ridley Scott reflects, "I love the idea of creating worlds in the movies I make, and this was certainly no exception. In the best possible way, I feel like we built Rome, and then fought all the way from the Rhine to North Africa and back to Rome. But it was great fun to do."
HANS ZIMMER earned dual Oscar® nominations last year for his score for the animated musical The Prince of Egypt and Terrence Malick’s World War II drama The Thin Red Line. In 1994, he won both the Academy Award® and Golden Globe for his score for the blockbuster The Lion King, which also spawned one of the most successful soundtrack albums ever. The composer has also been honored with Oscar® nominations for As Good as it Gets, Rain Man and The Preacher’s Wife.
Currently, his music for The Lion King is again drawing applause in the award-winning Broadway production of the musical. The show earned the 1998 Tony Award for Best Musical, as well as the Grammy Award for the Best Original Cast Album. Zimmer most recently reunited with The Lion King songwriters Elton John and Tim Rice for DreamWorks’ animated musical The Road to El Dorado.
Zimmer has composed the music for over 70 feature films. His credits include The Peacemaker, The Rock, Broken Arrow, Nine Months, Crimson Tide (for which he won a Grammy), Beyond Rangoon, Cool Runnings, A League of Their Own, Black Rain, Thelma & Louise, Backdraft, Green Card, True Romance, Days of Thunder, Driving Miss Daisy and My Beautiful Launderette, to name only a few. He is currently scoring John Woo’s Mission: Impossible 2, starring Tom Cruise.
In addition to his composing work, Zimmer heads DreamWorks’ film music division. His appointment marks the first time that a composer has headed the music department of a major studio since the days of Dimitri Tiomkin at MGM and Alfred Newman at 20th Century Fox.
LISA GERRARD previously co-wrote (with Pieter Bourke) the score for Michael Mann’s Oscar®-nominated drama The Insider, starring Russell Crowe, for which she earned a Golden Globe Award nomination. Gerrard’s music was also heard on the soundtrack of Michael Mann’s Heat and the score for the French film Nadro.
In addition to her film work, Gerrard is also a recording artist. She is a co-founder of the group Dead Can Dance, with whom she performed on nine acclaimed albums and a number of world tours. She released a solo album, The Mirror Pool, in 1996, and began her alliance with Pieter Bourke the following year, resulting in the album Duality.
