Courting disaster from the start, Graff painted
himself into a corner with his screenplay. The plot called for specific
songs that were integral to the storytelling and character development.
Unfortunately, Graff didn't have rights to them, and without the songs
there could be no film.
His first step was to write a series of letters to Stephen Sondheim,
asking him to read the script and consider virtually donating the
rights to three of his songs. Miraculously, Sondheim agreed, touched
by what the script was trying to say about kids.
With Sondheim's blessing, Graff and music supervisor Linda Cohen approached
the other composers and lyricists whose work had been included in
the script. Everyone, from Henry Krieger (Dreamgirls) to Burt
Bacharach and Hal David (Promises, Promises) said yes. Even
the notoriously license-shy Rolling Stones agreed to allow the use
of Wild Horses.
From the start, Oscar-winning composer Michael Gore (Fame)
and Tony Award-winning lyricist Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime) had agreed
to lend their talents to the movie. They wrote two original songs
for the film.
One by one the creative team was put together. "It's not like
we were paying people more than five cents, they just stepped up,"
says Graff.

Based on an actual summer camp for young actors,
singers and dancers, Camp is the dramatic, hilarious and show-stopping
story of a group of extraordinary kids growing up and discovering
who they really are.
Back at home, the kids of Camp Ovation are the outcasts and misfits
who everyone picks on. Michael (Robin De Jesus) is beat up when he
tries to attend his junior prom in drag. Ellen (Joanna Chilcoat) is
so unpopular she has to beg her brother to take her to her junior
prom.
But once these kids are on the bus, singing Sondheim songs, they have
arrived in Oz - at least for the next two months. As the hard work
begins on putting together a new show every two weeks, the drama isn't
only on stage. Relationships are formed, talent is tested, and hearts
are broken.
Vlad (Daniel Letterle), much to everyone's surprise, seems to be a
red-blooded, all-American straight guy in a sea of musical theatre
freaks and geeks. The bombshell Jill (Alana Allen) makes a beeline
for his attention, but is the insecure Ellen more his speed? Then
there's the lovely Dee (Sasha Allen), who is out to prove she's not
destined for a life of fag-hagdom. Vlad is a complicated character
who isn't sure what he wants in life, but finds out at Camp Ovation.
As the kids work frantically under the pressure of putting together
ambitious productions, their fragile egos are entrusted to guest director
Bert Hanley (Don Dixon). Bert had a Broadway smash ten years ago,
but now has fallen on hard times and become a cynical alcoholic. Through
the kids' passion and commitment, his talent and spirit is revived.
In the best tradition of Fame, the kids of Camp Ovation have an irrepressible
spirit that is uplifting and contagious to anyone within earshot.
Crammed full of production numbers and real life moments, Camp is
a comedic call for acceptance in a world where normal is no longer
the norm.
