RECORDING INFORMATION

The agile and beautiful voice of Spanish mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza has thrilled audiences for over forty years. Her excellence in Rossini helped start the revival of interest in his operas beyond the perennial favourite The Barber of Seville. As a Mozartean she has had few equals, and both these facets of her career are presented on her disc in "The Singers" series. Berganza recorded extensively for Decca and Deutsche Grammophon both in complete operas and in recital, and her work as an outstanding recitalist is featured as well.

• Made her operatic debut at the Aix-en-Provence Festival of 1957 as Dorabella in Cos“ fan tutte.

• Made her debut at the Piccola Scala in Milan in 1958 as Isolier in Rossini's Le Comte Ory, and at Glyndebourne as Cherubino in Mozart's Figaro. The latter would become her signature role, with which she stole the hearts of many.

• In 1960 she made her Covent Garden debut as Rosina in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia. A few years later she made her Metropolitan debut with the same role, as well as Cherubino.

• Besides the above, her roles have included Ottavia in Monteverdi's Poppea and Dido in Purcell's opera. At Edinburgh in 1977 she enjoyed a famous success as Carmen. In Zürich in 1979, she performed her first Charlotte in Massenet's Werther.

• Aside from her operatic career, her other speciality is Spanish song.
