ABOUT THIS SACD Gustav Mahlers monumental Symphony No.3 is a typical example of his need to create works that represented an artistic, "beautiful" synthesis of every aspect of life: from the ordinary to the inconceivable, from the lowly to the exalted life itself is an all embracing work of art. The Third Symphony, composed during the summer months of 1895 and 1896, is a kind of "universal symphony," a "monster," with a first movement lasting longer than Beethovens entire Fifth Symphony. Mahlers Symphony No. 3 includes solo song and choral elements. The soloist on this recording is the distinguished German mezzo Petra Lang one of todays outstanding German opera singers, known as much for the beauty of her voice as her complete dramatic commitment. The first full performance of the entire symphony premiered at the Krefeld Musikverein, which Mahler conducted in 1902. The audience welcomed the work with unmitigated enthusiasm Riccardo Chailly has released all of Mahlers symphonies with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra except the Ninth: the penultimate release in this cycle. |
