ABOUT THIS SACD Visit the special feature about this album here. This is the Decca debut of the golden voiced tenor from Malta, also available on CD. At 24 years Calleja has the kind of voice most 30 year old tenors would dream of: glossy, virile, lyrical and powerful this boy is going far. The Independent on Sunday, London Although music plays an important role in the life of the historic Mediterranean island of Malta, Joseph Calleja was not born into a particularly musical family. At the age of 12 or 13 young Joseph saw the Hollywood tenor Mario Lanza in The Great Caruso and when he opened his mouth I thought maybe there is other music than Metallica and Iron Maiden! Now 25 years old, Joseph Calleja sings with a grace and style reminiscent of the great tenors of opera's golden age. His long-time teacher Paul Asciak (another Maltese tenor who found success on the international stage) encouraged the gifted young Calleja to listen to recordings of the greatest singers of the past. Far from imitating any of them, Calleja developed an elegant vocal style to compliment the individual beauty of his lyric tenor voice. Most of the items on this first disc, recorded with Riccardo Chailly and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, are taken from operas in which Joseph Calleja has already appeared on stage, including three Verdi roles Alfredo in La traviata, the Duke in Rigoletto and Macduff in Macbeth, and two by Donizetti Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore and Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor. The arias by Puccini and Cilea (from Madama Butterfly, L'arlesiana and Adriana Lecouvreur) are from operas that Calleja has no intention of adding to his stage repertory just yet, preferring to let his voice evolve at its natural pace ...that doesnt mean that one can't dip one's toe in, and that's what I've done with these three arias. Calleja has already sung at many of the Worlds leading opera houses to great critical acclaim. Most recently, he appeared as Elvino in Bellinis La sonnambula in his debut at the Vienna State Opera and sang both Rigoletto and La traviata at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Calleja can do anything he likes with a God-given voice and what seems an innate sense of style. The Independent, London With the judgement he's already shown in his choice of roles, his stylish manner of singing and a voice of great individual character and beauty, the future looks very bright for young Joseph Calleja the tenor from Malta. |
