ABOUT THIS SACD
The New Year’s Concert from Vienna on the morning of January 1st, 2002, has proved a phenomenon. At the time, Seiji Ozawa’s first appearance on the famous podium was greeted enthusiastically by the demanding Viennese audience, and even more enthusiastically by the Viennese press, who hailed the concert as musically one of the finest in the great tradition of New Year’s Concerts.

But the response in snowbound Vienna was nothing to the subsequent success of the concert with the CD-buying public. It has since become the biggest-selling New Year’s Concert of all time, with sales now exceeding three-quarters of a million copies.

As a further exciting development in this remarkable success story, Philips are proud to release the concert on Super Audio CD, offering, for the first time, the chance to enjoy the celebrated Musikverein acoustic in five-channel SACD surround sound.

This orchestral programme also demonstrates the advantages that SACD surround sound can bring to such a release – greater clarity, greater spacial separation, greater instrumental fidelity (particularly of string tone), plus an additional immediacy that brings the listener ‘into the presence’ of the performers.

The original high-resolution 48kHz / 24 bit PCM recording has been transferred to DSD for this SACD release. In addition to five-channel SACD surround, the disc features SACD stereo, plus CD stereo (offering compatibility with all CD players).
