RECORDING INFORMATION Catalani's opera was a success at La Scala when first given there in 1892 but it remains something of a rarity in the theatre today and there have been very few recordings. The great Arturo Toscanini thought so much of the piece that he even named his children after characters in it!. The most famous number in the opera is Wally's hauntingly beautiful aria from Act 1 "Ebben?...Ne andrň lontana", an aria that has achieved huge popularity through it's inclusion in the film Diva. This 1968 complete recording of the opera stars Renata Tebaldi in the title role who "... gives one of her most tenederly affecting performances on record, a glorious example of her singing late in her career ... her poise and control of line ... provide a model for any generation ... the recording ... is superbly focused and vividly real. a fine example of Decca recording at a vintage period."
