RECORDING INFORMATION
Ataúlfo Argenta was born in Castro Urdiales in northern Spain in 1913 and his early musical training was as a pianist. He achieved a high reputation as a soloist and it was at the suggestion of the Carl Schuricht in the early 1940s that he decided to turn to conducting. Argenta began working with Spanish orchestras and in the early 1950s began working with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. Work with other orchestras followed and he achieved particular success with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the London Symphony Orchestra during the 1950s. Argenta made many recordings for Spanish Columbia — some of which appeared on Decca LPs in the 1950s (this was as part of a deal whereby Decca supplied engineers and equipment) — and a small number of recordings as part of a Decca contract. Several of these LPs have appeared on CD before — indeed the disc entitled “España” in its stereo version has regularly featured as a demonstration disc over the years; several of the recordings in this Original Masters set appear as international CD releases for the first time. All Argenta’s Decca recordings are in included in this set.

Argenta died suddenly in 1958 as a result of an accident when he inhaled carbon monoxide fumes from his car. His death was regarded as a national tragedy in Spain and his passing robbed the world of a conductor whose talents would no doubt have established him as one of the great maestri of his generation.
