Legendary Italian tenor Mario del Monaco was born in Florence on 27 July 1915 and died near Venice on 16 October 1982. Del Monaco made many recordings for Decca during his career, including important complete opera recordings. One of his greatest roles was as Verdi's Otello and he recorded the complete opera for Decca with Renata Tebaldi as Desdemona and Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic — a recording that is still regarded as one of the greatest recordings of the opera. Del Monaco’s official debut took place at the Teatro Puccini in Milan in 1941 when he sang Pinkerton (in Puccini's Madama Butterfly). Immediately after World War 2 he began appearing in the important houses outside Italy, including Covent Garden (with the San Carlo company), San Francisco and New York. Del Monaco’s voice was one of thrilling power and excitement.

Del Monaco recorded a number of recital albums for Decca during his recording career and this Original Masters set – the first Decca/Philips set to be devoted to a vocalist – features several of them made between 1952-1969, in a variety of music that ranges from opera to Italian songs and in roles both familiar and unfamiliar.
