RECORDING INFORMATION The legendary conductor Erich Kleiber was born in Vienna on 5 August 1890. He studied in Vienna and Prague and the early years of his career were dominated by opera. Kleiber was appointed music director at the Berlin Staatsoper and one of the notable events he conducted there was the premiere, in 1924, of one of the greatest operas of the twentieth-century, Wozzeck. Kleiber conducted many of the world's greatest orchestras and his appearances in Europe after World War 2 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, and at Covent Garden rank as some of the great performances of the post-war period. Kleiber had a great affinity with the Austro-German repertory and this is reflected in the handful of recordings he made for Decca during the years 1949-55. His two operatic recordings, Le nozze di Figaro and Der Rosenkavalier, achieved classic status from the moment they were first released and have never left the DECCA catalogue; some would argue that they have rarely been equalled let alone improved upon. This collection includes all of Kleiber's symphonic recordings on DECCA with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, and London Philharmonic Orchestras. The inclusion of two recordings of each of Beethoven's Symphonies 3 & 6 makes for fascinating comparisons - the more so when performed by orchestras of international standing. Recordings of additional pieces by Mozart, Schubert and Weber, taken from WDR transcription recordings made in the 1950s, and released by DECCA on LP during the 1960s, are also included. Erich Kleiber died in Zurich on 27 January 1956 - the 200th anniversary of the death of Mozart. |
