RECORDING INFORMATION Carl Schuricht was born in Danzig (now Gdansk) on 3 July 1880. He had piano and violin lessons at home before going to the Berlin Hochschule (1901-03) where his teachers included Humperdinck. He also studied in Leipzig with Reger. During his 20s he held appointments at various theatres in Germany before being appointed to the post of Music Director in Wiesbaden in 1912 - a post he would hold until 1944. Schuricht worked extensively in Europe and made his British debut in 1914; his USA debut was at St Louis in 1927 and his Vienna Philharmonic debut followed in 1934. Other posts Schuricht held included Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra where he as principal guest conductor from 1937-44. In 1943 he was appointed to Dresden - a post he left a year later when settled in Switzerland after the Nazis had started to make things difficult for him as he had a Jewish wife. Schuricht's career continued after World War 2 when he worked as a guest conductor - appearances which included an American tour (with André Cluytens) with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1956. Carl Schuricht died in Switzerland on 7 January 1967. In the early years of his career Schuricht conducted a great deal of contemporary music. As he grew older he focussed more on the 19th century German symphonic repertory and that is very much reflected in the small number of recordings he made for Decca. |
