RECORDING INFORMATION The Yeomen of the Guard Gilbert & Sullivans most tragic work features the Jester Jack Point who loses his beloved Elsie to the man he helps free from the Tower Of London. Though more operatic than most G&S, much of the pathos comes from the simplicity of Sullivans touching setting of the Jesters song of lost love, I have a song to sing, o! with consistently fine singing from all the principals (and especially from Elizabeth Harwood as Elsie), this Yeomen is unreservedly a success with its brilliant and atmospheric Decca recording The Penguin Guide to Opera on CD Trial by Jury The sparkling one-act Trial by Jury was the first great success for Gilbert, Sullivan and Richard DOyly Carte. It is set in a court of law where the heart-broken Angelina sues the caddish defendant for breach of promise, only to be surprised by the unconventional decision of the Judge. the Decca set also includes Godfreys immaculately stylish and affectionate Trial by Jury with John Reed as the Judge.
