RECORDING INFORMATION
The last of the Savoy Operas The Grand Duke is set in the Grand Duchy of Pfennig Halbpfennig where a theatrical troup become involved in a plot to overthrow the Duke himself. (Their secret sign — eating a sausage roll). Though rarely performed, The Grand Duke contains much typical Gilbertian wit and moments of great musical inspiration from Sullivan. This Decca recording followed an acclaimed D’Oyly Carte concert performance in 1975.

This represents, perhaps the ideal way to sample Sullivan’s least known major score … the recorded performance has both polish and vigour … The recording is characteristically brilliant.
