RECORDING INFORMATION The Gondoliers has always been among the most popular of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operas. The gondoliers of the title are Marco and Giuseppe, who sail the Grand Canal in Venice until they find themselves at the centre of another of Gilberts tales of babies swapped at birth. Discovering that one of them is King of Barataria, they are forced to reign in tandem until the unlikely truth is revealed. Isidore Godfreys conducting is vividly alive and Decca provided a large and excellent orchestra. The solo singing throughout is consistently good Thomas Round sings Take A Pair Of Sparkling Eyes very well indeed. The Penguin Guide to Opera on CD |
