ABOUT THIS DVD
All five titles include a DTS 5.1 surround mix, available for the first time for these programmes Carlos Kleiber’s appearances, whether in the concert hall or opera house, were legendary both for their rarity and the sublime quality of the music-making. It is no exaggeration to say that Kleiber was one of the most sought-after and highly-regarded conductors of the late 20th century.

Kleiber’s recent death, at the age of 74, has cost classical music one of its most charismatic yet elusive figures (Kleiber never gave interviews), and his relatively few excursions into the recording studio have left the musical world with a frustratingly small number of recordings, albeit all of them of the highest quality. Thus we are particularly fortunate that several concerts, including the five present in this box set, were filmed during his career. The hallmarks of Kleiber’s conducting – his minimal but graceful gestures, the authority he conveys from a thorough understanding and faultless memory of the score, plus his hypnotic command of his musicians – are all clearly in evidence here.
