ABOUT THIS DVD
Luc Bondy’s arresting perception of Richard Strauss’s fin-de-siècle opera as a torrid family-in-crisis drama was originally a triumph at the Salzburg Festival, before transferring to the Royal Opera, where it was filmed by the BBC. Bondy’s intimate examination is ideally suited to video presentation (here in enhanced widescreen) and throws into sharp focus the intensity of the various relationships between Salome (American soprano Catherine Malfitano), John the Baptist (Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel), and her dysfunctional family, the vacillating Herod (Kenneth Riegel) and imperious wife, Herodias (Anja Silja). Conductor Christoph von Dohnányi and the orchestra of the Royal Opera provide impassioned support, notably in the Dance of the Seven Veils and climactic Final Scene — and, for the first time, the performance can be enjoyed in 5.1 DTS surround sound. The DVD is completed by multi-language subtitles (English, French, Italian, Spanish and Chinese) and a 20-minute showreel, introducing the many other operas and ballets available on the Decca and Philips labels.
