ABOUT THIS DVD
Carlos Kleiber’s appearances, whether in the concert hall or opera house, were legendary both for their rarity and the sublime quality of the music-making. It is no exaggeration to say that Kleiber was most sought-after and highly-regarded conductor of the late 20th century (with the debatable exception of Herbert von Karajan). Kleiber’s recent death, at the age of 74, has cost classical music one of its most charismatic yet elusive figures (Kleiber never gave interviews), and his relatively few excursions into the recording studio have left the musical world with a frustratingly small number of recordings, albeit all of them of the highest quality. Thus we are particularly fortunate that several concerts were filmed during his career, including this, the second of the two New Year’s Concerts he gave with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein. The hallmarks of Kleiber’s conducting – his minimal but graceful gestures, the authority he conveys from a thorough understanding and faultless memory of the score, plus his hypnotic command of his musicians – are all clearly in evidence here.

This DVD release joins two other Kleiber DVDs, his 1991 performance of Mozart’s ‘Linz’ Symphony and Brahms’s Second, given with Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and the concert he gave with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, in 1983, conducting Beethoven’s Fourth and Seventh Symphonies.
