Glenn Branca
 

Composer Glenn Branca was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1948, and now resides in New York City. Over the past 20 years, Glenn Branca has written more than 50 major works, which include compositions for orchestra, but also for theatre, film and dance. He has received awards for his works from the National Endowment for the Arts (1988) and CAPS (1983).

In October 1994, Point Music made its first recording of two of his compositions: Symphony No. 9, which was written in 1993, and Freeform, written in 1989. The recording took place in Katowice, Poland, with the added advantage of the presence of the composer. The Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Christian von Borries, was joined by the choir Camerata Silesia for the performance of the Symphony No. 9.

Over the years Glenn Branca has received major commissions for compositions from various institutes, companies and festivals, such as the Twyla Tharp Company (1982 - Music for the Dance "Bad Smells"); the Brooklyn Academy of Music (1983 - Symphony No. 3); the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts (1984 - Symphony No. 5); the State Theatre Stuttgart (1986 - Music for "Edmond"); the Institute for Contemporary Art, NYC (1989 - "Bestiarium"); Expo '92 Seville (1992 - Symphony No. 8); Friends of Good Music, Berlin (1993 - Symphony No. 9).

Various compositions by Glenn Branca have been used in film and for performance by: the Alvin Ailey Company, Eric Bogosian, Peter Greenaway, the San Francisco and Denver Ballet Companies, the Philadelphia Dance Company, the Netherlands Dance Theatre, the Eugene Ballet, the Wooster Group, Laura Dean and the Joffrey Ballet, among many others.

Orchestras such as the London Sinfonietta, the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, the Graz Festival Orchestra, the North Dutch Philharmonic Orchestra, the New York Chamber Sinfonia, the Orchestra of St. Lukes and the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra have already performed compositions by Glenn Branca.

The composer has been included in at least 10 books about music, including All American Music by John Rockwell and The New Grove Dictionary of American Music.
