RECORDING INFORMATION
Siegmund and Sieglinde are brother and sister and indulge in an incestuous relationship and the result of their liaison is Siegfried, the hero who will redeem the gods. The chief of the gods, Wotan, irritated by his Valkyrie daughter Brünnhilde’s refusal to accord with his wishes, decides to put her to sleep and encircles her with fire. He decrees that only the man who knows no fear can rescue her…

Die Walküre is the second opera in Wagner’s mighty cycle of four operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung)

• one of the most exciting and popular passages in all Wagner’s operas is the tumultuous Ride of the Valkyries which opens Act Three

• Act Three also includes Wotan’s farewell, “Lebe wohl”, and the glorious Magic Fire Music which brings the opera to a magical close

• conductor Erich Leinsdorf was closely associated with the operas of Verdi, Puccini and Wagner and he brings his considerable experience to the score which requires both dramatic tension and great passion

• a star-studded cast includes the legendary Birgit Nilsson in one of her greatest roles as Brünnhilde

• Canadian-born American baritone George London possessed a superb dark-toned voice and was one of the finest interpreters of the role of Wotan

• Jon Vickers was a noted exponent of Siegmund and his heroic voice was admirably suited to this role

• Dutch soprano Gré Brouwenstijn was closely associated with a number of Verdi and Wagner roles and her lyrical qualities made her a perfect Sieglinde
