RECORDING INFORMATION
SIX NEW CLASSIC OPERAS CELEBRATING THE 80th BIRTHDAY OF DECCA's GREATEST SOPRANO

Dame Joan Sutherland celebrates her 80th Birthday on November 7th 2006

Throughout her long career Dame Joan Sutherland frequently returned to Verdi's tragic heroine Violetta, which she counted among her favourite stage roles.

It is often said that the role of Violetta requires three different sopranos to sing it - specialists in coloratura, drama and pathos. In this astonishing performance Joan Sutherland displays both phenomenal technical mastery and a heartfelt sense of drama as she brings Verdi's consumptive courtesan to life.

This, the first of Sutherland's two recordings of the opera, is noteable for the tender beauty of much of her portrayal, as well as the remarkable partnership with Carlo Bergonzi as Alfredo.

'Joan Sutherland's singing is overwhelmingly beautiful...vocally close to perfection'
