RECORDING INFORMATION SIX NEW CLASSIC OPERAS CELEBRATING THE 80th BIRTHDAY OF DECCA's GREATEST SOPRANO Dame Joan Sutherland celebrates her 80th Birthday on November 7th 2006 Throughout her career Joan Sutherland and her husband and mentor Richard Bonynge brought a number of 'lost' operas back to the attention of the musical world. Massenet's supernatural opera of sorcery and passion in ancient Byzantium proved to be a spectacular vehicle for Joan Sutherland's unique vocal and dramatic talents and this Decca recording has a very special place in the catalogue. Dame Joan is joined by one of her favourite stage partners, the Spanish tenor Giacomo Aragall in the role of the Knight Roland. A real operatic rarity which showcases Joan Sutherland on top form, Esclarmonde was originally written for one of Massenet’s favourite singers, Sybil Sanderson who posessed an enormous vocal range of three octaves. After the early success the opera remained largely unknown until Joan Sutherland revived it in 1974 in San Francisco. This recording was made a year later, in 1975 and further performances were given by Joan Sutherland at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1983. |
