RECORDING INFORMATION
Decca’s recorded legacy is dominated by the huge number of complete opera recordings and vocal recitals. While a vast number of these recordings have seen CD release in the past 20 years, many of the original LP recitals have been reissued with other material in order to increase the overall playing time due to the longer time available on CD and modern covers have replaced the originals.

This new mini-series is unashamedly nostalgic and presents original recitals as they were first published during the 1950s and 1960s. Original LP cover art is reproduced and the original back of the LP is used as the inside of the digipack. A clear tray is used with a detail from the original LP sleeve as a background, and the back of the digipack gives the tracklist and artist details in a uniform, current style.

This is the second group of Classic Recitals.

Mario del Monaco was born in Florence on 27 July 1951 and died in near Venice on 16 October 1982. Del Monaco made many recordings for Decca during his career, including important complete opera recordings. One of his greatest roles was as Otello and he recorded the complete opera for Decca with Renata Tebaldi as Desdemona and Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic — a recording that is still regarded as one of the greatest recordings of the opera. Del Monaco’s official debut took place at the Teatro Puccini in Milan in 1941 when he sang Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly). Immediately after World War 2 he began appearing in the important houses outside Italy, including Covent Garden (with the San Carlo company), San Francisco and New York. Del Monaco’s voice was one of thrilling power and excitement, and he did suffer criticism for rarely singing very quietly! Del Monaco recorded several recital albums for Decca and this recital showcases him in a wide variety of roles both familiar and unfamiliar.
