Alicia de Larrocha maintained a fine repute for her chastity and taste in performance, her relatively small stature and small hands having been surmounted by a big imagination and a lifetime of stretching exercises. Her penchant for the clear, plastic line made her a natural Mozart exponent, and in these four virtuoso concertos none so well accommodates her fluency and rhythmic vitality as the under-rated "Coronation" Concerto in D Major . . . we have a set that bears repeated musical scrutiny for profoundly aerial pleasures, intellectual and emotional.

Larrocha's agility (particularly left-hand) is remarkable, as are her preternaturally even trills.

Larrocha's pearly toned, lightly pedalled touch and the way she can taper a phrase ending to resemble musical speech . . .

Weich abgefedert, fast romantisch verklärt bei ihr [Alicia de Larrocha], gewohnt straff und knusprig bei ihm [Georg Solti]. Das mischt sich ausgleichend, vor allem im festlichen "Krönungskonzert" Nr. 26. Ihre Domäne sind die verträumt dahinfließenden Larghetto-Mittelsätze, er legt bei Allegro und Allegretto richtig los. Vor allem haben diese Aufnahmen von beiden das eingefangen, was auch in der Klassik seltener wird: Persönlichkeit.
