. . . roll up for this enjoyable DVD of Massenetżs cocktail of sex and piety, caught in a ritzy but cornball John Cox staging at the Metropolitan Opera. Flemingżs creamy trills as the Egyptian courtesan who finds God are almost as luscious as her costumes . . .

Fleming brings some lovely vocalism to her role, with equalized tone, steady line and some delightful and well-placed floated notes, and shows the two sides of Thaďs's life . . . Thomas Hampson gives a front-rank assumption of the strange monk.

Renée Fleming is vocally splendid, positively caressing Massenet's ornate vocal line with luscious ease . . . this is the most recommendable performance.

The role might as well have been made for her, with its reliance on leisurely warmth, endless reserves of breath, and floating high notes.

Die Rolle der zum Kloster bekehrten Kurtisane steht Renée Fleming wie jede Schöpfung von Lacroix: perfekt. Mit schmiegsamster Legato-Kultur gleitet sie durch die Rolle, setzt an zu frei schwingenden Spitzentönen.
