BBC Music Magazine Award for Alisa Weilerstein
American cellist Alisa Weilerstein was yesterday named winner of the BBC Music Magazine Recording of the Year Award with her debut concerto disc of the Elgar and Carter Cello Concertos with the Berlin Staatskapelle and Daniel Barenboim on Decca.
Alisa Weilerstein’s recording was voted for by both the public and BBC Music Magazine’s expert jury and was chosen as the best of more than 1,500 reviewed by the magazine in 2013.
The awards jury said: “Weilerstein avoids nostalgia and produces an account full of passion, grief and nobility of feeling … it’s been years since a new recording of Elgar’s great concerto made this kind of visceral impact.”
Alisa Weilerstein signed an exclusive contract with Decca Classics in 2011. Her winning recording has been widely feted, the New York Times acclaiming “the soloist’s superb control keenly matched by the conductor’s insightful support”.
