. . . a canny collection ranging from Rossini to Puccini . . . Donizetti's "Ugo, Conte di Parigi" is probably his least performed work, but the overture showcases the characterful La Scala brass . . . [the Intermezzo from "Madam Butterfly"] gets the 24-carat treatment . . . Other gems include a rewarding spotlight on La Scala's concertmaster, so sweet-toned he is practically edible, in a morsel from Verdi's "I Lombardi".

. . . a fascinating forage through almost 100 years of Italian music . . . it all makes a fine workout for the Filarmonica della Scala . . . the recording suggests that most sections are already in fine shape -- the brass is particularly impressive in the Boito extract . . . Chailly has always been a superb Puccini conductor, and predictably it's the music of the last decades of the 19th century that shows him at his best here.
