That Ms. de Niese was in superb voice was clear from the start, when she negotiated the bright filigree of the Mozart with graceful precision. She gave beautifully turned performances of two Dowland songs — “Come Again” and “What if I Never Speed?” — in an approach that seemed a workable compromise between the relatively straightforward vocal sound that singers of Renaissance music prefer, and the more dramatically inflected style of the opera stage.
Her performance of “Al desio di chi t’adora,” an alternative aria from Mozart’s “Nozze di Figaro,” was amply virtuosic. And then there were crowd-pleasers like Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro” and “So anch’io la virtù magica,” which she sang with a ravishing fluidity.
