Born: 13 April, 1941 Blackwood, Monmouthshire (Wales) Soprano Margaret Price is arguably the most beautiful lyric soprano voice to come from the British Isles in more than fifty years. She began her career in 1962 at the Welsh National Opera as Mozart's Cherubino and the following year, London heard her for the first time in the same role. Price would 'graduate' in a few years to become one of the most impressive Countesses in the same opera. Her operatic horizons increased to include Aida, Desdemona, Elisabetta and Amelia in Verdi, and verismo roles as well including Adriana Lecouvreur. Her Strauss roles were primarily Ariadne and The Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier. Price has never been comfortable with long stays away from home (now Munich) and her beloved dogs and so America saw her infrequently but her visits to both Chicago and San Francisco were memorable. Price's Metropolitan debut as Desdemona has to wait until 1985. She has recorded frequently for the Universal labels most notably as Isolde for Carlos Kleiber and Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera with Pavarotti and Solti.
