Born: 22 November, 1930 Minehead, Somerset, England Organist Peter Hurford has enjoyed a career that has embraced both virtuoso performance and scholarly acclaim. He took a dual degree at Cambridge University in law and music and the disciplines of performance and research have been part of his makeup from the beginning of his career. His first fame came in the late 1950's when he was master of Music at St. Alban's Abbey. Hurford rebuilt the organ to allow for the authentic playing of early French and German music. His international performing activity began soon thereafter and he has concertised tirelessly ever since. Peter Hurford has organised festivals, taught both in England and the USA and has recorded extensively. Most notably, he has recorded all the organ works of JS Bach for The Decca Music Group and his wide-ranging repertoire is represented on all three of the Universal labels as organist, arranger and conductor. He is a true Renaissance man of the modern organ world.
